What pool types are available for fantasy hockey?
OfficePools offers a variety of formats for both the NHL regular season and NHL playoffs, designed to suit different group sizes, experience levels, and preferences:
Regular Season Pool Types
- Box Pool
NHL players are grouped into evenly matched “boxes.” Participants choose one player from each box to create their team. Great for fundraisers, company contests, and large groups. Use a preset template or create your own. - Draft Pool
Participants take turns drafting players one by one, with no duplicate selections. Ideal for smaller, more engaged groups. Supports both live and online drafts. - Open Pool
Poolies build teams based on admin-defined roster rules (e.g., 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, 2 goalies). Players can be chosen by multiple participants. Highly flexible and suitable for any pool size. - Dynasty Pool
Designed for long-term leagues where teams carry players over from season to season. Ideal for experienced groups looking for deeper engagement and strategy. - Pick’em Pool
Participants select winners of individual NHL games. Scoring is based on correct picks. Simple to play and great for casual or weekly competitions. - Survivor Pool
Participants pick one team to win each night. Once a team is used, it can’t be picked again. Miss a pick or choose a losing team, and you’re eliminated. Great for quick-play formats.
Playoff Pool Types
These formats follow the same structure as their regular season counterparts but are limited to playoff-bound players:
- Playoff Box Pool – Choose one player per box from a preset or custom template.
- Playoff Draft Pool – Take turns drafting players; no duplicates allowed.
- Playoff Open Pool – Build teams using roster rules set by the admin.
- Playoff Pick’em Pool – Select winners of each playoff round or series.
- Playoff Bracket Pool – Predict the full NHL playoff bracket, from first round to Stanley Cup Final. Scoring is based on correct series predictions.
How do I Invite people to my hockey pool?
The easiest way is to use your Shareable Invite Link:
- Go to the Admin menu of your pool.
- Select the Invites tab.
- Copy the Shareable Invite Link.
You can send this link via email, text, group chat, or post it on social media. It’s reusable and ideal for inviting multiple people or allowing multiple team submissions.
For one-time, individual invites, use the Personal Invite Link on the same page.
Need help tracking invite status or managing your invite list? Visit the Invites tab for all available options.
How do admins add teams to a hockey pool?
The easiest method is to send out invites and let poolies enter their own teams.
To add teams manually:
- Go to Admin > Roster > Team Editor.
- Click + Add Team, enter the team name and email.
- Click Save (or Save and Add Another for multiple entries).
- Click the team name to add players, then Save.
Poolies can then log in or sign up using the email you entered for them.
How does a poolie claim or connect to a team?
If a team was entered by the admin, the poolie simply needs to sign in using the same email the admin used.
- If the poolie doesn’t yet have an account, they’ll need to create and verify one.
- f they use a different email, the admin must update the email in Admin > Roster > Team List to match their OfficePools account.
How do I change the hockey pool type?
If no picks have been made, you can change the pool type after finishing the 5-step Setup Wizard:
- Go to the Admin menu.
- Select the General tab.
- Click Admin Actions.
- Choose Change Pool Type, select the new format, and click Save.
You’ll be guided through the setup steps for the new format.
How do I delete a hockey pool?
You can delete a pool if you created it and won’t be using it. Otherwise, all pools are archived under your account.
Note: You must complete the 5-step Setup Wizard before accessing the Admin menu (just click Save on each step to finish).
To delete a pool:
- Go to the Admin menu.
- Click the General tab.
- Select Admin Actions.
- Choose Delete Pool.
- Check both confirmation boxes and click Delete Pool.
This action is permanent and cannot be undone.
How do I trade a player?
Trading rules vary depending on the pool format and your admin’s settings.
Box Pool
- Replace a player with someone from the same box.
Draft/Open Pool
- Trade between teams, pick up free agents, activate reserve players, or trade draft picks.
Scoring Note: You keep points earned by the dropped player up to the trade date. The new player’s points begin counting from the trade’s effective date.
How to Make a Trade (Poolies)
1. Go to the TRADES tab from the standings page.
2. Choose one of the following:
- Trade A Player – Exchange, free agent, or package trade.

- Select the player you want to drop and the player to add.
Trade types:
- Another poolie’s player → Exchange Trade
- Available player → Free Agent Trade
- Same box → Box Trade
If draft pick trades are enabled, you can include picks in exchange offers.
4. Click Confirm Exchange:
- Exchange Trades go to the other poolie for approval.
- All trades (unless auto-approved) are reviewed by the Admin.
Admin Trade Settings
- Go to ADMIN > TRADING > Trade Settings.
